Jacobus de Backer 1631-1677

Aantekeningen

Margaret's first husband was Claes Jansen Bakkers. Others record his given name as Jacob or Jacobus, and surname as Backer or Baker. He was a prominent merchant in New York City. His trading operations were extensive and his wife Margaret actively aided him in his business enterprises. He was admitted to the rights of burgher in 1657, made Schepen in 1663, and was presiding Schepen and elected delegate to the Provincial Assembly in 1664. About the year 1666 he had financial troubles and had to heavily mortgage his house and lot to Jean Cousseau. Shortly thereafter, he went back to the Netherlands, leaving Margaret and her small children in New York at the mercy of the creditors. He was declared dead in 1677 to allow Margaret to settle her financial affairs.
