ENGLISH TRANSLATION
The
correspondence and the highly
interesting documents Jacques Travaillé provide me strengthen my thesis
about the origin of the name Travaille in Friesland.
I will try
to explain why the name Travaille suddenly pops up in 12th of March
1812 in de acts of Frans Martens Travaille (1760 - 1833).
Before the name did not exist and the family-names used until 1812 where as
usual in Holland by patronyms (the fathers name) . So the parents of Frans where Marten Franse and Maaike Klaase.
In 1812 the
Napoleontic administration system was in effect
and Marten had to administer at the Town hall (that time named the
Marie) his sons Rienks (25yr), Marten (24yr), Sjoerd (17yr) and daughters
Lijsbeth (19yr) and Maijke (10yr). The new rules demanded a chosen family name
which could never be changed after. So
far the oldest act of Naamgeving found is of Frans the sons of Marten Fransz.
Either he has administered his children
all with the same name as all of his children used that same name.
By the way: As Napoleon was almost defeated and the North part of Holland was
the last region to introduce family names many father sabotages that rule with
funny names or refused to choose a name as they did not believe all that modern
nonsens. Hence the huge existence of the name “de Vries” which was the default
for those who refused to choose themselves. Also the civil servants punished
refusing fathers with nicknames or fantasy-names describing the looks of a
person or his profession.
From 1812 onwards every father and heads of the family was obliged to appear at
the Marie in person and declare the familyname of himself and his children. This was documented with an act of
“naamsaanneming” For some reason or due
to sabotage some fathers declared a different name for each son making very
hard to research genealogy in some parts of Friesland.
Especially
in Friesland there existed more reasons to
object or sabotage of the naming rules.
The Dutch Army contained a big regiment of Frisian soldiers taking part in the
great battle on Russia after being integrated in the French Army .
It must have been attractive for many
young man to join the army. Imagine that it was not referred to as
Napoleon army but Hollands Army! Maybe
because of that the French soldiers felt superior and despised the Dutch
soldiers and handled them badly giving
the nasty nicknames. One of a common
nickname was the name for “lazy
worker” referred to by the same expression “TRAVAIILE” .
According to Jaques study there is a specific
difference in the verb Travaillé and the nickname Travaille (without é).
After the French defeat in the terrible
Russian battle the survivors returned to their countries taking history,
memories and for sure some Nicknames
with them. They returned home and
arrived in the turmoil of the changed administrative of the civil system. Hence
the sudden show up of the name Travaille in the Frisian civil acts.
I assume, and continue investigating, if one of the ancestors or close family
actually took part in the French/Holland Army.
Ate least regarding the Frisian branch of the family there is no historical
trace of proof that the name was carried from France refugees.
Throughout
my database the name Travaille is used in the full pedigree, even on the ancestors of Frans Martens of who we now
know that they never have been using that name.
This Is my personal convention and it so enables the use of the fantastic research features of Geneaweb.
The full pedigree and stamreeks is now in view and available to the search
engine.
BE AWARE THAT THIS IS HISTORICAL FAULTY!
